For Sailing Clubs
Southern Sicily with its famously reliable weather (almost 350 sunny days a year), steady prevailing winds (Mistral, Grecalo or Scirocco) and the relative proximity of locations like Malta or Tunisia makes it an ideal location all-year-round for sailing.
A week-long private retreat for sailing schools looking to call Mireabilis their home base. Your group will have exclusive access to our villas on the estate in the UNESCO heritage town of Scicli and the sailing boat moored in Marina di Ragusa, with our full support to run your own programs. Wether for training, bonding or relaxation – we’ve got you covered.
We are sailors ourselves and we know pretty well how the sailing schools work. However, we are not a sailing school and we do not provide instructors. We invite sailing clubs, together with their own instructor, to organize weeklong training sessions for groups of maximum 9 crew (8 students and one instructor) at our on-land estate at Villa Mireabilis and on our boat (a Beneteau Cyclades 43.3 fully equipped) or on other types of boats or catamarans from our friends and partners.
Our home port is at Marina di Ragusa which is an excellent and modern marina and our location is perfect for exercising departure and arrival or various mooring maneouvres, for example. Once out in the open sea, the waves and winds tend to be gentle most of the year making the life quite easy when learning the ropes and the location is perfect for learning or exercising the costal sailing. We are about 50 nautical miles from Malta, or about 8-10 hours of open sea sailing and you can organise a two or three day trip back and forth, which is perfect for exercising the day and/or night open sea sailing.
At our villa, we have two large and very well suited spaces (the Grand Salon of the Main Villa and the Loggia of the Summer House) for your group meetings, presentations, briefings or tests, equipped with professional video projectors and screens. We are working to bring in and install on our estate a fully rigged mast and sail simulator that will help the students learn and exercise certain maneovres on land before going on the boat. We have a good collection of sailing manuals (RYA) and sea maps and guides.
The schools, after breakfast, can start every day with lectures, briefings and tests at our villa and afterwards take a short 10-15 minutes drive with our van to Marina di Ragusa where they can continue with practical sessions. Concerning the meals, there are several options: taking picnics on the boat, eating at one of the restaurants in the marina or somewhere else in and around the town of Marina di Ragusa. There are quite a few excellent choices. Finally, if an overnight sailing trip is not organized, the group will return to the villa, take a refreshing shower and finish eventually with a briefing. If a festive dinner is not already planned at our villa, then we recommend going out in Scicli, Modica or Ragusa for a nice dinner in one of the many excellent restaurants that can be found around.
Then sleep and repeat. So let’s go out sailing together!
Miles Building & Skills Improvement
For the sailors in need of improving their skills or adding miles on their logbook, if you need and you don’t have a skilled certified skipper with you and we are not available, we will try to find one for you, from our local network of friends and partners for an additional cost that will be negotiated.
Daily sailing trips along the coast, overnight cruises to Marzamemi or further to Malta or the Pelagie Islands, or even several days long ones to Siracusa, Catania and Taormina can be planned and organized in two forms: return trips or one-way trips, with additional fees for the return of the boat. The overnight and multi-day cruises have to have on board one of our skippers, for yours and our safety. We have a good collection of sailing manuals (RYA) and sea and harbor maps and guides.
Cruising With Friends & Family
If someone in your group is already a certified and skilled skipper (VHF radio license included) you can choose your holiday, either a round or a one-way (for an additional fee) cruising trip towards Malta or along the Eastern or South-Western coast of Sicily. The boat will be prepared accordingly for on-board and overnight stay (beds, kitchen, toiletry) but you will have to stock it with the food and drinks you want from several local supermarkets that can be found in Marina di Ragusa.
You might also find it fun and entertaining to just opt for daily outings around the coast, throw the anchor in some nice places and go for some swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, SUPing, fishing (over and under sea) and, in very particular cases, even diving. At the end of the day, you will return to the villa, take a good shower and go out in a nice local restaurant for a good dinner. There might also be a festive dinner at home or on one of the many secluded beaches… yes we do that too!
Discover Sailing
If none in your group is a licensed and skilled skipper but you would like nevertheless to experience and have a bit of fun on a sailing boat, we can take you out on some daily sailing sessions, with picnics (or even BBQs) and prosecco or other drinks onboard. We will throw the anchor somewhere nice and then go for some swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, SUPing or fishing (over and under sea) and, in very particular cases, even diving. At the end of the day, we will return at the villa, take a good shower and, if a festive dinner is not already planned at home, go out in a nice local restaurant for a good dinner.
